Service Description
Youth Learn to Sew (Ages 9–15) This Youth Learn to Sew workshop is a 4-class series designed to teach young makers real sewing skills in a supportive, encouraging environment. Each class builds on the last, helping students grow their confidence step by step while learning how a sewing machine works and how to create finished projects they’ll be proud of. All materials are included — sewing machines, pre-cut fabric, notions, and tools — so students can focus on learning and creating. Fabric is pre-cut for each project, allowing kids to concentrate on sewing skills, accuracy, and safe machine use rather than measuring or cutting. Each project is intentionally chosen as a stepping stone to the next, building both skills and independence at the machine. Class 1: Sewing Machine Basics Students start by learning the parts of a sewing machine and how it works. We cover threading the machine, winding and changing a bobbin, controlling speed, selecting stitches, and basic troubleshooting. This class focuses on safety, comfort, and building confidence before moving on to projects. Class 2: Quilted Mug Rugs Using pre-cut fabric, students sew quilted mug rugs while practicing straight stitching, turning corners, sewing through layers, and pressing their work. This class builds accuracy, patience, and coordination at the machine. Class 3: Lined Drawstring Bag Students create a fully lined drawstring bag using prepared pieces. They’ll learn how to sew with layers, make casings, turn projects neatly, and understand simple construction techniques — skills that can be used again and again. Class 4: Lined Zippered Pouch In the final class, students learn how to install a zipper and assemble a lined zippered pouch. This project brings together everything they’ve learned and gives them a big confidence boost as they complete a more advanced piece. By the end of the series, students will leave with finished projects, practical sewing skills, and the confidence to use a sewing machine independently and continue sewing at home.
